Oakmont Poses Challenges
Oakmont, hosting its record 10th US Open, will provide a challenging course with rough exceeding 5 inches and greens running at 14.5-14.9 on the Stimpmeter, likely leading to a winning score over par.
Master champ Rory McIlroy told reporters after a Monday-US Open practice round that Oakmont;
“Last Monday felt impossible,” McIlroy said. “I birdied the last two holes for 81. It felt pretty good, it didn’t feel like I played that badly. It’s much more benign right now than it was that Monday. They had the pins in dicey locations, and greens were running at 15.5 [on the stimpmeter]. It was nearly impossible. This morning, it was a little softer. The pins aren’t going to be on 3 or 4% slopes all the time”.
Running through June 15, the US Open will feature a 156-player field battling over 72 holes of stroke play on a course renowned for its punishing rough, lightning-fast greens, and demanding layout.
Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau won dramatically at Pinehurst last year, bringing his big-hitting style and major pedigree to aim for a third US Open crown.
Other contenders include 2021 US Open Champion Jon Rahm, and Collin Morikawa, whose precision suits Oakmont’s demands
